Sweet Letters from Harry to Bess Truman

February 10, 2006

Here’s an interesting snapshot of history just in time for Valentine's Day: The Truman Presidential Museum and Library provides access to letters from Harry to Bess Truman between 1910 and 1957. These letters shed light on their personal relationship as well as the role she played as "sounding board for issues of state" for him. Particularly touching is the June 28, 1957 anniversary letter in which he sums up each year of marriage: "June 28, 1920: One happy year; June 28, 1921: Going very well; June 28, 1922: Broke and in a bad way; … June 28, 1948: A terrible campaign, Happy day…" Most letters are in his hand, so they may be a bit difficult to make out; five dated between 1933 and 1945 have been transcribed, making it a bit easier.
